Australian Silica Quartz Group (ASX: ASQ) has released encouraging preliminary metallurgical results for its White Swan kaolin project, located near Esperance, Western Australia. The company processed an 800-kilogram bulk sample through independent testing facilities in China, aiming to validate the material's suitability for commercial ceramic applications. Initial mineralogical analysis of the raw sample showed a kaolinite content of approximately 47%. Following a single-stage dry beneficiation process using a cyclone mill and classifier, the kaolinite concentration was successfully upgraded to 83%. Ceramic firing tests conducted at 1,200°C subsequently produced test discs with a brightness of 85.3%.

These results are intended to support the company’s push into the Chinese market, where representatives recently engaged with potential processors, equipment suppliers, and ceramic manufacturers. Management noted that Chinese participants expressed a strong preference for consistent, large-scale supply sources as domestic resources face depletion. The company believes the technical success of this initial testwork confirms the project's potential to serve as an attractive feedstock for international end users.

"These results are highly encouraging and are expected to have appeal to potential international customers as the Company takes the next steps towards securing offtake agreements"

"ASQ is excited to pursue an entry into the strengthening kaolin market with a product that we are confident will be attractive to end users"

— Sam Middlemas, CEO

The company is now moving forward with several commercial and operational objectives. Ongoing evaluation programs are currently underway in China, involving potential customers and processors who are testing samples of the White Swan material. Parallel to these evaluations, the company is actively engaged in direct shipping ore (DSO) offtake discussions. To formalize the development pathway, the company plans to initiate a feasibility study focused specifically on the export of direct shipping ore kaolin.

The White Swan project is situated within reach of the Port of Esperance, providing the company with a logistical advantage for bulk exports. By demonstrating that simple dry processing methods can significantly upgrade the raw clay, the company aims to establish a clear, low-risk route to commercial production. The current technical data serves as a foundation for these continued negotiations and the upcoming feasibility work, as the team focuses on converting the existing resource into a consistent supply chain for the international ceramic industry. The company maintains its commitment to securing partners who can potentially value-add the material.
