Frontier Lithium Inc. has entered into a contribution agreement with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to secure up to $2.3 million in non-repayable funding. The agreement, facilitated through the federal Global Partnerships Initiative, is set to support research into the valorization of secondary materials at the company’s proposed PAK Lithium Project in northwestern Ontario.

The funding is specifically tied to advancing the technical and economic feasibility of processing waste streams generated during the lithium conversion process. A key focus of the research is the evaluation of sodium sulphate by-product to determine if it can be successfully converted into specialty fertilizers for agricultural use. By identifying and developing these alternative applications for process waste, Frontier Lithium aims to improve the overall resource efficiency and environmental footprint of its future operations.

The company is currently advancing technical and economic feasibility work for these by-product valorization initiatives as part of the agreement.

The support from the federal government aligns with broader objectives for the Canadian mining sector. Commenting on the investment, the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, noted:

“Canada is making strategic investments to strengthen our critical minerals value chain and get more from the resources we produce.”

The PAK Lithium Project, which is operated as a joint venture between Frontier Lithium (92.5%) and Mitsubishi Corporation (7.5%), is currently in the advanced exploration stage. The project is designed as a fully integrated initiative, encompassing both a mine and mill operation alongside a downstream lithium conversion facility.

Trevor Walker, President and Chief Executive Officer of Frontier Lithium, emphasised that the research supported by the agreement is a component of the company’s wider operational plans.

“Our development strategy is focused on a phased approach, beginning with the establishment of the mine followed by the conversion facility. This sequential plan ensures we efficiently advance toward a vertically integrated lithium operation while maintaining flexibility for future growth.”

The project is moving toward commercialization, with the current agreement formalizing NRCan's commitment to improving the competitiveness and sustainability of the site’s lithium refining flowsheets. The integration of by-product valorization is expected to contribute to the creation of new economic opportunities, further positioning the project within the North American battery supply chain.
