Ionic Rare Earths Advances Belfast Recycling Plant

Ionic Rare Earths (ASX: IXR) has moved to the next development phase for its proposed magnet recycling facility in the UK by appointing Tenova Advanced Technologies to complete the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study. This appointment marks a significant operational step following the completion of an initial engineering bridging study earlier this year. The facility, which utilizes proprietary technology developed by the company’s subsidiary, Ionic Technologies, is designed to recycle spent permanent magnets to produce high-purity, individually separated rare earth oxides.

The FEED study will define the technical framework for the plant, including process flow diagrams, equipment specifications, and power requirements. This design work is a necessary precursor to the detailed engineering and construction phases. Management expects the FEED process to conclude later this year, facilitating the procurement of long-lead equipment and supporting a projected construction start in 2027.

Beyond the technical design, the permitting process for the Belfast site is moving forward. The company has successfully navigated public consultation without encountering objections and is currently engaged in pre-application discussions with the local planning authority. IonicRE intends to submit a full planning application for the facility during the third quarter of 2026. This infrastructure project is further supported by an offer in principle for a £12 million government grant, which underscores its alignment with national critical mineral ambitions.

The company is working toward a Final Investment Decision for the facility, which is currently targeted by the end of the September 2026 quarter. Once operational, the plant aims to provide a sustainable, domestic supply chain for rare earth elements, while serving as a strategic template for potential future deployments in other international markets.
