Talga Group Ltd has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Fortum Battery Recycling Oy to evaluate strategic opportunities across the European graphite and battery materials value chain.

The non-binding arrangement establishes a framework to assess the supply of graphite recovered from Fortum's recycling operations for refining into battery anode materials by Talga as a complement to primary production. The companies also intend to explore the joint development of blended or optimised anode materials combining primary and recycled graphite streams, alongside potential power supply and energy solutions leveraging Fortum's low-carbon electricity generation portfolio to support Vittangi operations.

Technical feasibility, commercial structures and long-term offtake agreements will be evaluated under the memorandum, which runs until a binding sales agreement is signed or a long-stop date of 31 December 2033. The collaboration targets a commercial start from 2029, with indicative volumes starting at 400 tonnes per annum in 2029 and ramping up to 10,000 tonnes per annum by 2034. Any binding agreements remain subject to financial investment decisions by both parties, construction completion, mass-production commissioning, further due diligence, and board approvals.

The partnership follows several similar engagements by Talga, which signed non-binding strategic partnership and offtake letters of intent for Vittangi with Hanwa Co., Ltd., Dainen Materials Co., Ltd., and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation between July and September 2026.

The Vittangi Anode Project is Talga's flagship development, centred on vertically integrating 100% owned Swedish graphite resources to produce battery anode materials. Construction of the planned commercial-scale anode plant for the project is targeted to commence in 2027, subject to a final investment decision.
